WELCOME TO PERSHORE CIVIC SOCIETY

What is a Civic Society?

Civic societies are groups of people who care about their local environment. Many of these people work voluntarily in the community to ensure that they are pleasant places in which to live and form the basis of a functioning Society as opposed to the force-backed structure of the state. Abbey

We are independent, non-political organisations whose activities include ensuring good standards in new building and preserving important existing buildings. Our Society is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the heritage of the town in which we live and to keep the past, present and future interests of Pershore alive.

Founded in 1959, Pershore Civic Society aspires to:-

  • Represent the interests of residents.
  • Preserve our heritage and stimulate high standards of Town Planning.
  • Be aware of the need to grow and develop in a sympathetic way.
  • Promote Civic Pride as a means of improving quality of life in all places where we live, work and play.
  • Encourage a greater awareness of local history in all age groups.
We are not about ‘all work and no play’. We have talks, outings and activities including an annual wine and cheese party, all of which are well attended.

There is a quarterly newsletter, just to keep everyone in touch. The Executive Committee meet regularly and the Planning Committee meet every four weeks, in order to keep a watching brief on planning applications.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

I am delighted to have been made Chairman of the Pershore Civic Society and I hope that I can carry on the good work of my two immediate predecessors, Andrew Clasen and Mervynne Payne.

I am fortunate enough to have inherited an excellent programme for 2012/13 and I look forward to meeting members on visits to Craycombe (Wednesday 23 May); Conderton Manor Garden (Thursday 21 June) and Birtsmorton Court (Tuesday 3 July) and the Avon Navigation Trust (Thursday 11 September) and at talks on the Bredon Hoard (Thursday 20 September) and Flood Risk Management (Thursday 18 October). Our talks programme will be extended into the Winter, so keep an eye on the Newsletter and Website for details. We like to respond to members’ wishes, so if you have an idea for a visit or the subject of a talk please let anyone on the Committee know. My telephone number is 01386 552750 and email address is david@hutt3221.freeserve.co.uk.

Behind the scenes, the work of the Planning Committee will continue and I am particularly lucky to have such knowledgeable and dedicated members to scutinise all planning applications. I am sure that there will be some interesting debates on the new and controversial central government planning guidance. Until such time as we have the South Worcestershire Development Plan in place we have little protection against speculative development but we will continue to promote appropriate development on sites such as the former Abbey Garage; the former Cottage Hospital and the former Health Centre as well as various former garage courts and seek to defend the town against unnecessary greenfield development. We will also continue to agitate for the provision of a bridge over the railway to the industrial estate to complete the Wyre Piddle by-pass.

All in all, an interesting and challenging year which I am looking forward to enormously.

David Hutt
