WELCOME TO PERSHORE CIVIC SOCIETY

What is a Civic Society?

Civic societies are groups of people who care about their local environment. Many of these people work voluntarily in the community to ensure that they are pleasant places in which to live and form the basis of a functioning Society as opposed to the force-backed structure of the state. Abbey

We are independent, non-political organisations whose activities include ensuring good standards in new building and preserving important existing buildings. Our Society is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the heritage of the town in which we live and to keep the past, present and future interests of Pershore alive.

Founded in 1959, Pershore Civic Society aspires to:-

  • Represent the interests of residents.
  • Preserve our heritage and stimulate high standards of Town Planning.
  • Be aware of the need to grow and develop in a sympathetic way.
  • Promote Civic Pride as a means of improving quality of life in all places where we live, work and play.
  • Encourage a greater awareness of local history in all age groups.
We are not about ‘all work and no play’. We have talks, outings and activities including an annual wine and cheese party, all of which are well attended.

There is a quarterly newsletter, just to keep everyone in touch. The Executive Committee meet regularly and the Planning Committee meet every four weeks, in order to keep a watching brief on planning applications.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

Your Society has been active this autumn with several projects. The Blue Plaque in memory of John Ash was unveiled on September 10th in front of a good crowd who enjoyed tea and cakes from the Georgian era after the ceremony. Judy and Stuart Megerry’s talk on PODS, with particular reference to creating the sets for a variety of shows, was fascinating. We were grateful to Stuart for bringing so many models to the talk.

We are looking forward to the winter programme starting with a meeting with our MP, Harriett Baldwin, at the Baptist Church, Broad Street, Pershore on January 5th.

Your Committee has been active, updating the website; designing and having printed a new promotional leaflet; preparing a revised Town Walk booklet and holding further meetings with Croome.

Perhaps our most important achievement in recent months has been finding a temporary home for the late Dr Marshall Wilson’s extensive archives on Pershore. It would have been a tragedy if this enormous collection of information about Pershore had been lost to the town. Now we hope to be able to find a permanent home for the Archive so that Pershore people may have access to it.

I hope that by the time you read this the future of the Pershore Library will have been resolved.

With Best Wishes to all for a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Andrew Clasen
